Distinguished and Famous people from Roxby Downs

🏉 Jack Hombsch

Jack Hombsch grew up at Roxby Downs, attending St Barbara’s Parish School and Roxby Downs Area School before completing his education in Adelaide. Junior football with the local Bulldogs preceded an AFL career with Greater Western Sydney, Port Adelaide and Gold Coast. Returning with a school community programme, he caught up with people who had helped his education and football. Later recognition included the AFL’s Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award in 2017. The local connection includes both the boy learning the game and the professional returning to encourage children in the same classrooms and on the same oval.

⛏️ Roy Woodall and the Olympic Dam exploration team

Roy Woodall led Western Mining Corporation exploration teams whose work included the Olympic Dam copper-gold-uranium discovery in 1975. Geologist Douglas Haynes’ personal account also credits colleagues including Dan Evans, Hugh Rutter and Jim Lalor, preserving the collaborative nature of the achievement. Their work used geological reasoning and investigation to identify a deposit concealed beneath younger rocks. Roxby Downs later developed to support the mine, so the connection is an exploration project that preceded the modern town. Interpreting evidence, testing ideas and drilling were shared undertakings, drawing on several specialists’ knowledge.
